Chennai Super Kings calls up fastest T20 & List A centurion mid-season through IPL 2025

Chennai Super Kings have reportedly called Baroda wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel for mid-season trials after being eliminated from the IPL 2025 season. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer said that the five-time champions may be preparing for succession planning following a disappointing campaign.

Urvil Patel grabbed attention with his 28-ball century in the 2024–25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Tripura in Indore. He hit the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian and the second-fastest ever in the format. His explosive performance came just days after the batter went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Urvil Patel Part of Gujarat Titans in Indian Premier League 2023

After smashing a 28-ball century, Urvil Patel smashed another hundred off just 36 balls against Uttarakhand just a week later. The batter also scored a 41-ball hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against Arunachal Pradesh in 2023. That knock placed him among the fastest centurions in India’s List A history.

The right-handed batter was part of the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL). However, he didn’t get a chance in the playing XI throughout the tournament. He was released by the franchise ahead of the auction. Patel was called up from the Super Kings at the end of IPL 2025.

I’ve Got Backroom News That CSK Have Called Urvil Patel – Wasim Jaffer

Wasim Jaffer revealed that Chennai Super Kings have called Urvil Patel for a mid-season trial during IPL 2025. Speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, Jaffer said that the franchise had shown interest in the Baroda wicketkeeper-batter. He expressed surprise that Patel went unsold at the auction.

“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise, I was actually surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so don’t know what’s cooking there,” Jaffer said on ESPN Cricinfo.

Chennai Super Kings Signed Ayush Mhatre as Replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad

Chennai Super Kings had signed Ayush Mhatre as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad after having him trial during the ongoing IPL season. However, CSK’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs were dashed on Wednesday when they were defeated by Punjab Kings.

Punjab bowled out Chennai Super Kings for 190 runs after a four-wicket haul from Yuzvendra Chahal, including a hat-trick. Punjab managed to chase down the target, finishing with 194/6, and secured the win with two balls to spare.

With this result, Punjab moved up to second place in the points table with 13 points, while Chennai are in 10th position with just four points. The MS Dhoni-led team ended their playoff hopes in the marquee tournament.

Chennai Super Kings already have multiple wicketkeeper-batters, including Dhoni, Vansh Bedi, and Devon Conway, and they’ve now called up Urvil Patel for a trial.
