Rohit Sharma completes 6,000 runs for Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma brought up a landmark feat during the ongoing game between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Thursday, May 1. It was during the first innings of the game that Rohit registered his name in the record books of MI.

The former MI skipper became the first batter to reach the 6,000-run mark for the franchise. The top-order batter’s run count includes the two Champions League T20 campaigns with Mumbai back in 2012 and 2013. The current innings was Rohit’s 231st for the popular side.

Rohit holds a number of records for the franchise under his belt, including the most sixes as well as the most Player of the Match awards received, to name a few. The revolutionary cricketer has also led the franchise to five IPL titles.

Interestingly, apart from the above records, the hitman has also etched his name in the list of batters with the most runs for a single franchise in the history of the league. As a result, he joined his Indian compatriot Virat Kohli, who leads the runs chart. As a result, Rohit Sharma also got well ahead of the Indian legends Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni as well.

MI set a 218-run target for RR

Speaking of the current game, MI posted 217 for the loss of a couple of wickets. Rohit combined with Ryan Rickelton (61 off 38) to stitch together a 116-run stand for the opening wicket. Rohit was dismissed on the fourth delivery of the 13th over. His 53 (36) comprised a total of nine fours. He was the second and final wicket to fall.

Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya made full use of the platform laid by the openers to carry the momentum further into MI’s innings. Both ended up unbeaten on identical scores (48* off 23), providing RR with a stiff target in a bid to keep their playoff hopes alive. Ahead of the game, MI stood third with six wins from the 10 games played so far.
