Torrent Group, a leading multinational company from Ahmedabad, is set to buy a 67% stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Gujarat Titans (GT) from CVC Capital Partners before IPL 2025. This move will make Torrent the principal owners of the franchise.
New Ownership for Gujarat Titans
CVC Capital Partners, who bought the team in 2021, will transfer their majority stake to Torrent Group. The deal is currently being processed by the IPL Governing Council and is expected to be finalized soon.
Torrent Group’s Cricket Ambitions
Torrent Group has long been interested in cricket. They previously bid for IPL teams in 2021 but were outbid. They also tried to get a team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) but were unsuccessful. Now, with an estimated valuation of INR 41,000 crore, Torrent Group is ready to enter the IPL.
Jinal Mehta to Lead the Investment
Jinal Mehta, son of Torrent Group’s chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta, will oversee the investment in Gujarat Titans. This deal marks the end of CVC Capital Partners’ control over the franchise.
Gujarat Titans’ Journey
Gujarat Titans won the IPL title in their debut season in 2022 and were runners-up in 2023 under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. They finished eighth in 2024 under Shubman Gill’s leadership. The team plays its home matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the largest cricket stadium in the world.
Looking Ahead
With a talented roster including Shubman Gill, Rashid Khan, Jos Buttler, and Mohammed Siraj, Gujarat Titans are gearing up for an exciting IPL 2025 season under new ownership.
